Dyband Delivers Intelligent IP Traffic
Management for
the Government of Nunavut
OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA (July 3, 2003)-Dyband,
a supplier of IP traffic management solutions to service providers,
governments and enterprises worldwide, today announced delivery
of a multi-site IP traffic management solution to the Government
of Nunavut.
Dyband product is being used by the Government of Nunavut
to manage traffic dynamically and evaluate traffic conditions
throughout the network topology, down to the level of individual
subscriber, every 10 ms. When congestion is detected, transfer
rates are immediately modified in the affected areas; when
congestion is relieved, transfer rates return immediately
to normal limits. By assessing and responding to traffic conditions
every 10 ms, Dyband is able to rapidly toggle transfer rates
between normal and congested limits, thus making full use
of available bandwidth. Dyband also enhances the efficiency
of the Government's Internet connection by reducing packet
loss, thereby minimizing the need for packet retransmissions.
Industry Canada and Telesat have also provided
Nunavut with 12.5Mhz of satellite transponder space to be
used exclusively for program-specific traffic on the Nunavut
Community Services Network, which connects schools, libraries,
colleges and health centers throughout Nunavut. The Government
of Nunavut is using Dyband to allocate bandwidth dynamically
over this broadband connection and to segregate Public Benefits
traffic from core government operations.
"We have a requirement to provide an effective and efficient
distribution of core bandwidth, and to report to Industry
Canada on how the dedicated Community Benefit bandwidth is
being allocated." Said Rich Kimball, Senior Telecommunications
Specialist, "We can't allow a single user or application to
monopolize this critical resource. Dyband is enabling us to
give all of our customers a high quality of service as well
as provide real-time and historical reports to prove our methods
are working."
"Dyband enables the Government of Nunavut's Informatics Services
Branch to maximize throughput across one of their most expensive
assets, the satellite link." said Tim Welch from Dyband, "Dyband's
IPTM 2100 minimizes periods of congestion, reduces packet
loss and retransmission requests, and allows as many as 30%
more users to be placed on the same connection."
"Without Dyband, I don't believe we could fulfill our bandwidth
delivery and reporting requirements" stated Kimball.
Dyband's 2100 IPTM intelligent traffic management solution
enables access providers to control bandwidth consumption,
by IP address, for up to 50,000 managed points-individual
subscribers, groups, subnets, and/or gateways. Multiple allocation
schemes (guaranteed, preferred, equitable, etc.) distribute
available bandwidth across all managed points during both
normal and congested conditions. By evaluating the bandwidth
capacity/demand ratio 100 times per second, Dyband can dynamically
shape individual and aggregate bandwidth usage based on traffic
conditions, minimizing network congestion, reducing packet
loss, and optimizing Internet backbone utilization. The 2100
also allows access providers to define and manage a virtually
unlimited number of SLAs at distinct price points. And, it
enables new visibility into bandwidth consumption, allowing
operators to make real-time usage decisions, and gather comprehensive
historical statistics for later analysis.
The Dyband 2100 IPTM solution is available today on Windows
and Linux platforms, for more details please visit our website

ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT OF NUNAVUT
Canada's newest territory encompasses nearly
two million square kilometres, with nearly 29,000 residents
living in 26 communities ranging in population from five to
almost 6,000. Nunavut relies exclusively on satellite networks
for its telecommunications needs. The Government is already
using innovative approaches in the use of high-speed communications.
By 2005, the Government intends to have broadband access available
in all Nunavut communities. Located in the territorial capital
of Iqaluit, additional general information may be obtained
by telephone at (867) 975-6000, or via the Internet at www.gov.nu.ca.
DYBAND AVAILABILITY
Dyband 2100 IPTM software, which is available
today, is easy to install and runs on industry-standard hardware
platforms and operating systems. The software is available
in a broad range of configurations that scale to meet the
needs of service providers and enterprise organizations as
they grow-from 1 Mbps to 155 Mbps of managed bandwidth
per Dyband unit. Prices for the 2100 IPTM start at $500 USD
and are dependent on the aggregate amount of bandwidth managed
by the Dyband solution.
