Dyband software deployed at the
University of Bristol
OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA (September 4, 2003)-Dyband,
a supplier of IP traffic management solutions to service providers,
governments, enterprises and educational institutions worldwide,
is pleased to announce delivery of it's powerful IPTM 2100
traffic management solution to the University of Bristol.
The University of Bristol has chosen the Dyband solution for
their residential network, or ResNet, to control the traffic
for individual students and groups of students quickly and
efficiently. Dyband's low-latency traffic shaping algorithm
excels in the face of network congestion or high traffic load
- assessing and responding to traffic conditions every 10
milliseconds - enabling the University to deliver the effective,
reliable bandwidth management needed for the Universities'
high-speed distributed residential access network.
"What we needed was a bandwidth management
solution that would limit, by IP address, the minority of
students who were using excessive bandwidth, while allowing
normal students' traffic to pass," said Nick Skelton, ResNet
Co-Ordinator for the University of Bristol, "Dyband enables
us to perform this task quickly and easily and with a minimum
of manual system administrator intervention." The University
felt that application shaping solutions were too unpredictable
and initially latency intensive, and at any rate many of the
sophisticated Bristol students in residence are capable of
encrypting their traffic - or using increasingly popular encrypted
peer-to-peer software - and thereby easily circumventing application-shaping
devices.
"The built-in rate ramping feature works extremely well in
our network, and improves performance for incoming traffic
- as well as smoothing over excessive usage automatically,"
continued Mr.Skelton, "We finally have complete control over,
and visibility into, all of the users' bandwidth requirements
on our ResNet."
"Dyband for educational institutions provides outstanding
bandwidth management, without the headache and potential privacy
issues of prying into the myriad of shifting applications
used by students," said Tim Welch of Dyband, "the University
of Bristol can now provide consistent, high-speed access to
students in residence, while minimizing network congestion,
reducing packet loss and eliminating congestion-related outages.
Dyband even allows the University to provide reports back
to the students on precisely how much bandwidth they use in
any given time period."
The Dyband 2100 IPTM solution is available today on Windows
and Linux platforms, for more details please visit our website
